A pain in the head with the pain being above the eyes or the ears, behind the head (occipital), or in the back of the upper neck. Headache, like chest pain or back ache, has many causes. All headaches are considered primary headaches or secondary headaches.
Mechanical pain is the general term that refers to any type of back pain caused by placing abnormal stress and strain on muscles of the vertebral column. Typically, mechanical pain results from bad habits, such as poor posture, poorly-designed seating, and incorrect bending and lifting motions.
Whiplash is an injury resulting from a sudden extension or flexion of the neck. Whiplash can also be termed neck sprain or neck strain or, more technically, cervical acceleration/deceleration trauma.
Asthma is a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It can affect all ages. Management involves occasional chest physiotherapy to assist with sputum clearance, breathing techniques as well as nebulisation. Pneumonia is inflammation of one or both lungs. It often includes increased mucous production and decreased inflation of a segment/s of the lungs. Bronchitis is inflammation of the large airways leading into the lungs. This condition also often includes excess mucous production. In this condition, however, the lungs themselves are usually unaffected. In both Pneumonia and Bronchitis, our physiotherapists would individually assess the needs of each patient and treat accordingly. Techniques may involve manual chest physiotherapy, the teaching of lung inflation techniques, nebulisation and/or appropriate mobilisation.
Pregnancy-related and post-natal problems may include anything from back and leg pain to pelvic pain and mal-alignment problems. Post-natally, it may also include engorged breasts. With regards to the former, our physiotherapists are able to accurately assess pelvic mal- alignment and restore correct alignment using painless, yet effective, muscle energy techniques. No clicks or cracks required!! Spinal mobilisation techniques, core strengthening exercises and K-taping are just some of the techniques used to improve back and leg pain. Electrotherapy such as ultrasound has also proven to be highly valuable in the treatment of engorged breasts.
Unfortunately the success of your surgery doesn't finish the moment you leave the operating theatre. You'll have to do some work in the form of exercises to optimise your results.
